Punk classics become a musical for the first time ever in The Anarchy Arias Musical, set to open in London’s West End in 2018 and inspired by Sex Pistols’ bassist Glen Matlock’s operatic punk album ‘The Anarchy Arias’.
Recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and featuring songs from the English National Opera, Matlock’s album sees 13 classical renditions of punk favourites, including those of The Clash, Sex Pistols, and The Damned, which will feature in the brand-new, feel-good musical.
The story follows an amateur operatic society who encounters ever-waning audiences night after night, as their 150th anniversary approaches. The singers are on the verge of taking their final bow, when they valiantly trade Mozart and Wagner for punk classics such as Oh Bondage Up Yours! by X Ray Spex and Pretty Vacant by Sex Pistols in a moment of pure desperation to save the society that united the tight-knit group.
The Anarchy Arias Musical will be produced by Universal Music, the world’s biggest record label, who have invested in huge stage classics such as Mamma Mia.
Senior Executive at Universal Music, Ted Cockle, explains:
“I was listening to founding member of the Sex Pistols Glen Matlock talk on Radio 4, and the New Statesman arts editor Kate Mossman suggested Glen’s project ‘The Anarchy Arias’ sounded like it could be a musical. It just seemed like such a natural fit. We’d just announced the album and the reaction to the music was incredible. To make these powerful, dramatic arrangements come to life on stage will be astonishing.”
Open auditions for The Anarchy Arias Musical will be taking place across the UK to source the best amateur operatic talent. Email firstname.lastname@example.org before September 1 for more information.
Ted Cockle adds that the musical is a very exciting project that puts Universal Music at the forefront of punk musical curation, and he feels that open auditions provide a fantastic opportunity to seek out the UK’s best young, homegrown talent.
